Her Knives are Never Sharp Enough

In typical families the daunting task of keeping the fleet of knives sharp fall on the guy. We are not different. My wife constantly requires me to sharpen her (enormous) collection of knives in tip-top condition. To be blunt, I’ m not looking forward to sharpening the tools at home. However, it’s as inevitable as the death. Sooner or later the day will come. And we have to be prepared.

The truth is that a dull knives is VERY frustrating to use. It is much more dangerous as well because you have to use excessive power to cut. A sharp knife is less likely to skip than a dull one.

My wife spends a lot of time in the kitchen. I noticed the pure joy on her face when she uses the sharpened knives. I help her from time to time and I too enjoy using the sharp knives. We do however have a this Smith’s manual sharpener from here but it is buried deep in the drawer and she uses it from time to time when I am not at home to sharpen the knives but the effect of good sharpening is much better.

Indeed a nicely sharpened blade makes preparing the food much easier, the food looks much more attractive and it is quicker as well.

Some backstory and how my father did it

My father was really hands on tool man. I don’t remember anything he was not able to fix or repair. Since I was 4 I was helping him with those small fixes around the house and in the garage. I loved spending the weekends as his tiny assistant in everything. This man taught me a lot of skills. Before I turned 10 I was able to polish my shoes to a high shine, to change tires as needed, to change light bulbs, and to sharpen knives. Sadly, he passed away 6 years ago. I still have all those skills however. I fell internal gratitude every time I do something he taught me. I still remember his quiet gently voice telling me what we were going to do and how to do it. He never minded me help me even though I was slow and clumsy at times.

I loved watching him sharpen the knives at home. He would pull a chair on the porch outsides, would take a sharpening stone, would wet it (it was a water stone) and would meticulously stroke the blade across the stone again and again. Slowly. When he believed the knife is ready he would gently touch it with his thumb to check whether it is sharp enough. If it is, he would simply show me that he would easily shave off few hairs off his arm. Then he would proceed with cutting some old newspaper in half.

Yes, the knives were SO sharp.

Sometimes when the sharpening has to be done quickly, he would just flip a ceramic plate upside down and run the blade across the bottom. He would do it first on the one side and then again on the other. Just a few passes and you are done. Quick, easy, cheap.

Two tips I learned for sharpening

First and foremost, always keep your fingers always from the blade. So in case it slips, your fingers won’t get cut.

Second, find the right sharpening angle and keep it the same. Maintaining the angle isn’t hard. It just requires some practice. Once you’ve sharpened enough blades you will be able to tell by the sound and the feel of the edge whether the angle is correct.

One bonus tip: Use a coarse and a medium stone if the knife is very dull and use a medium stone if it only needs some touching. Test. Repeat with medium stone if needed. Test again.

That’s it. Now try it yourself!

How does music affect you before, during and after running?

Have you heard the saying that the only sound you should listen to when running is the sound of your feet hitting the ground? Well, this question turned out to be quite sophisticated with many people backing up that statement and many others that insist that listening to music makes you a better runner.

An interesting new study published by the official Journal of NSCA (National strength and conditioning association) shows that you are getting less benefit of music the harder you run. The study was conducted on 15 experienced runners. The pre-run music aroused the runners and got them better prepared for their running.

People who listened to music during the 5km runs did their first two laps (1/6 of the total run) faster than those who listened to no music. After the initial first laps the gap between the two groups decreased significantly. Apparently initially the runners were affected by the music as they needed their time to process all the different information. However, as soon as the brain adjusted to the intensity of running, an interesting process took place. The ATTENTION SWITCHING took place and directed the runner’s attention to the most important signals.music and running

These findings are also backed up by previous one that concluded that music effects performance less when the user input higher effort.

In average the runners who listened to music ran their 5 kilometers faster than those who doesn’t. While the difference in running times is not significant from the runners’ point of view, it is still interesting for the researchers. Interestingly, the people with the fastest results listened to slow music.

It was also found that listening to music after the run had the opposite effect to the music listened prior to running. That means that runner’s heart rates were returning to normal faster. The conclusion was that much like the other post-run recovery measures (hydration, feeding and gentle exercising) listening to slow music after the run helps the body to return faster to its pre-run state.

Also make sure that are no other attention grabbers such us uncomfortable footwear or clothes. Wearing proper shoes can make the difference between healthy feet and painful ones. If you have feet with problems such as bunions, hammertoes, heel pain or anything else, make sure you are buying the shoes that can help minimize the problem. Get the right type and size too.

In a nutshell: should you listen to music while running? Well, it’s up to personal preference. When asked to vote, most runners voted ‘yes’. Are you one of them? Do you listen to music while running? We would love to hear your comments below!

Crazy deal: Buy Your Winter Boots in Spring and Save BIG

Sounds crazy, right? Who on earth would need boots in the middle of the summer? And before you start imaging sweaty feet, friends laughing at you, and start questioning my sanity, let me explain.

Some of the hottest footwear deals of the year happen in the final weeks of winter. Truth to be told, I was quite surprised to find that the fall is not the perfect time to stock up on winter boots. You get the same high-quality, awesome, fashionable boots at a fraction of the price. Just bear in mind that you most probably won’t be able to find the best selection. As the end of the season approaches, the inventories are usually thin, but hey the prices are low enough to make for your time.

Men (myself included) usually buy stuff on demand. We need something and we should get it right away, no matter what. However, the budget-savvy take it a step further. Budgeting is not and should not be overwhelming task. All you need is just a little planning ahead and wise shopping habits.

Look in “Last chance”, “Clearance” and “Sales” section of your favorite websites. You and your family would be able to fill your closet with stylish boots at very affordable prices.

Many stores only sell some designs for just one season, meaning that your girl or wife can get designer boots at very affordable prices. Just after the end of the winter season the retailers sell at heavy discounts. And these are not only boots that are stylish and fashionable, but even work boots. I’ve bought some of my best work boots on sales. Don’t forget the designer boots deals. Last year my wife was craving for a pair of some-designer-boots but the price tag was way over what we can afford. Truth to be told she was quite unhappy as she fell in love with those boots. Long story short, I was able to surprise her with a pair of these mere few months later (and got enough money left to buy me a truckload of my favorite dark winter beer!).

The other good thing is that you’ll have a head start in the winter season. You won’t have to fight all the other guys at the beginning of the season, when everybody freaks over the first snowfall. You will be prepared with a closet full of boots and shoes.
